On Thursday, March 22 and Friday, March 23, the Highmark Foundation hosted Foundations for Success: A symposium featuring best practices in children’s health promotion. The event featured two keynote presenters, Dr. David Katz and Horacio Sanchez. In addition, the Highmark Foundation invited Signature Partners from its Highmark Healthy High 5 initiative to share their expertise and lessons learned from participating in this monumental children’s health initiative.

Strength and success often rely on convening people with like minds and shared vision. This session explores how selecting and engaging willing partners can work to ensure long-term success through:

- Rallying around an evidence based model
- Melding individual agendas to achieve a common purpose

Session 2: Strengthening Infrastructure
Tools and strategies to foster systems change
Providing ample funding for programmatic activity is not the only key to successful community initiatives. Fostering capacity building among key organizations and partners is also essential. This session explores how lasting change can be accomplished to better ensure long-term impact through:
- Building capacity to support large-scale implementation
- Supplying technical support and continuing education
- Training the trainers
Presenters Dr. Robert Gillio, MD Chief Executive Officer and Chief Medical Officer for Innerlink and Lynn Cromley, Director of the Center for Safe School will discuss their experiences in working with both health care professionals and school based professionals to institute change at the ground level.

Session 3: Illustrating Impact
Collecting meaningful data through ongoing evaluation
If you know where you’re going, you have to know where you’ve been and from where you’re starting. The importance of data gathering and analysis in community initiatives cannot be understated. This session will detail how organizations can:
- Establish realistic benchmarks and goals
- Collect data across many different environments
- Analyze data to make informed decisions and enact course corrections to strengthen ongoing initiatives
